Preview Expeditie – a musical journey through light and imagination

This September, the brand-new performance Expeditie will premiere: a layered, sensory experience created by music ensemble Kluster5 and composer/maker Aart Strootman.

On May 1st, we invite you to a special preview in our open studio; a unique chance to take a peek behind the scenes and discover how this exciting performance is coming to life ahead of its official premiere next season.

Expeditie is inspired by the first letter from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, in which explorer Robert Walton shares his dreams and ambitions for a journey to the Arctic. Drawing from these themes, Kluster5 and Strootman take you on a musical expedition into the unknown. In this performance, light becomes the sixth member of the ensemble, a full-fledged storyteller, weaving together sound, space, and atmosphere.

The music captures the tension of Walton’s voyage — the doubt, the wonder, the thrill of discovery — and invites you to travel along through sound and light.

During the preview, you'll experience how these elements merge into an immersive world that brings feelings of uncertainty and awe to life.

This preview is not only a first glimpse of the performance, but also an invitation for reflection: what does this expedition awaken in you?

The makers are curious to hear your thoughts!

And the evening doesn’t end there.

After the open studio, you’re welcome to stay for KOnStruCt — a place for musical exploration and experimentation. Hear fresh ideas from composers and percussionists in a program full of surprises. KOnStruCt is a collaboration between Slagwerk Den Haag, the Royal Conservatoire, and Korzo, designed to support the next generation of music makers as they create, connect, and innovate.
