Fear Me

Maker Dalton Jansen
Duration 60 min
Part of Season 26-27

A physical experience of f-f-fear

Fear Me is a deeply personal dance performance that holds fear up to the light, even when that feels terrifying. Fear that settles inside you and takes over. The fear of trying to stay in control when every alarm bell in your body is already going off. Through powerful urban contemporary dance, award-winning choreographer Dalton Jansen and his performers tell a gripping story without relying on a conventional narrative. Feel tension breathe down your neck as courage races ahead.

Representation, connection, and sensation
On stage, one actor and two dancers move together through panic and hope, stillness and explosion, holding on and letting go. They are not searching for explanations, but for sensations: lightness within heaviness, weight within clarity and certainty. In this physical exploration, Dalton reveals what his work has become known for: representation, connection, and emotional impact. Elements that have earned him several dance awards.

A personal work that never romanticizes fear
Fear Me is a personal performance about what happens when tension settles into the body. It’s about uncertainty and the space where light offers no guarantees and darkness can sometimes feel protective. The piece does not romanticize fear, but reveals the exhaustion and the strength that emerge when you keep moving, even when every part of you wants to stop. Because standing still is not an option.

Fear Me is supported by De Coproducers, a collective of fourteen Dutch theaters that champion innovative artists and performances that matter.

Dalton Jansen is a choreographer, dancer, and the artistic director of dance company BLACK BIRDS. His work moves between hip-hop and contemporary dance and is known for its powerful physical language, personal urgency, and social engagement. Dalton explores themes such as identity, fatherhood, community, and healing, always driven by a desire to represent, connect, and confront.

After graduating from the Urban Contemporary Dance program (JMD) at the Amsterdam University of the Arts in 2018, he quickly established himself as one of the Netherlands’ leading young choreographers. His work has earned him numerous awards, including the Zilveren Krekel (Birds), the Gouden Krekel, the BNG Dansprijs, the Prijs van de Nederlandse Dansdagen, the Jonge Zwaan, and the DOX Award.

His breakthrough came with Birds, a powerful and poetic performance about brotherhood, loss, and connection. Dalton has created work with companies and institutions including Conny Janssen Danst, Theater Rotterdam, DOX, and Summer Dance Forever, and has choreographed works with students from Codarts and the Academy of Theater and Dance.
