Unheard Music Festival: Queer Klassiek

Artiest Rick Paul van Mulligen en Matangi Quartet
Duration 60 min
Part of Unheard Music Festival

Rick Paul van Mulligen about queer-identity in classical music

From Broadway theaters to opera houses worldwide, talented LGBTQIA-composers have made a strong mark with their compositions for centuries within the music scene. However, this has not always gone smoothly. Handel, Britten, Barber, Bernstein, Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky were all composers who explored their sexuality, consciously or unconsciously, and kept it diffuse.

In Queer Klassiek, actor Rick Paul van Mulligen converses through Samuel BarbersString quartet performed by Matangi, a story about (sexual) diversity in the classical music world. A story about the tolerance of the public and whether your (sexual) identity can actually be heard in music.

Conversation led by storyteller Sanne Pols, about current developments in the field of diversity and inclusion in the world of classical music. Entrance is free, you can attend the talk in Korzo Club.

Every year during the National Remembrance Day on May 4, we reflect on the victims of the World War II and subsequent war trials and peace operations. At 8 pm, there will be two minutes of silence throughout The Netherlands.

The National Commemoration takes place at the National Monument on Dam Square Amsterdam. Unheard Music Festival will broadcast the National Commemoration at 7:30 PM on NPO1 to commemorate together with the audience.
