Passion: A Resurrection Loop

Maker Het Muziek & Pensive Vivifier
Duration 60 min
Part of Queer Futurism
Season 26-27

What you thought was buried has risen again.

We are the heirs to the legendary and spectacular story of the suffering of Christ: The Passion. In this musical theater performance, we experience how that narrative, more than two thousand years later, still shapes how we see gender roles and how we experience guilt and shame. Images collide and family dynamics are gradually unraveled. Hear how new music featuring the recorder, trombone, harmonium, a high-pitched male voice, and deep grunts pulls you into a grand, personal, and never-ending resurrection.

Family dynamics dissected in intimate musical theater
With this Passion, Janne Kosmos (Pensive Vivifier) shares their own story. One of their siblings confronts them with something that’s long been left unsaid: that Janne used to kick and hit them when they were younger. Maybe you recognize this too: family as a place where love and pain exist closely. Twenty years later, it is time to name the pain and to see the conditions that made these family dynamics possible: upbringing, religious language, shame, roles, and the culture of “just carrying on.” Told through harmonium, recorder, trombone, and three singers. Dramatic and filled with rage, betrayal, blood, sadness, silence, and hope.

Het Muziek is an ensemble for new music that constantly pushes boundaries. They don’t define what music is – they explore it. Through bold music projects, unexpected collaborations, cross-disciplinary work, and an open mindset, they shape the sound of today. Their repertoire ranges from landmark twentieth-century composers to the newest twenty-first-century work.

Het Muziek performs everywhere: from concert halls and outdoor festivals to theaters, and from their home base in Amsterdam to venues far beyond the Netherlands. Always with the aim of inspiring broad audiences and inviting them to discover new sounds.

Pensive Vivifier is an ensemble founded in 2020 by Janne Kosmos and Tes Wolters Bos. They began as a digital art collective and inspire new disciplines and elements to work with themes such as identity and transformation. They are guided by intuition and curiosity, combining performance, video, composition, and other forms of expression to create unexpected constellations of elements while telling deeply personal stories.

What if being queer wasn’t the exception, but the rule? With Queer Futurism, we imagine and move toward a future where queer people, as well as non-normative heterosexual identities, are fully embraced as they are. In performances that question the norm, you’ll see all kinds of people thriving in freedom, acceptance, and joy.
