India Dance Festival: Open Studio - Poernima Gobardhan

Duration 60 min
Part of India Dance Festival

During the open studio, Poernima invites you to the church studio at Korzo to have a first glimpse of her latest piece Kālī Mātā, which will premiere on May 27 during India Dans Festival.

Poernima Gobardhan is one of the great talents of Indian dance in the Netherlands. In her work, she translates, deliberately and with integrity, the ancient stories, subjects, and concepts from classical Indian literature into choreographies that have their impact, even today. Tonight she dances two solos.

Kālī Mātā

In Kālī Mātā, the intellect and the body are weighed against each other. In a world organized by order, categories and frameworks, your ability to understand things is praised. In times like these, we want to get the chaos around us under control. We do this by making well-considered choices and leaving no room for errors so that everything is clear. But what lies beyond this clarity? Beyond the intellect? Kālī Mātā departs from this clarity with the desire to go beyond it. This means entering into a battle and being willing to face the darkness that we do not know of.

As usual from Gobardhan, the movement language Bharata Natyam plays an important role in Kālī Mātā. But there is also an appearance of another form of movement that inspired the solo, Kalaripayattu, a martial art from South India. Precision in hand gestures, intense emotion and an immersive soundscape take you into this battle between the intellect and the body.
