Anusha Subramanyam

Anusha is a Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer who performs and teaches internationally. She is also a dance therapist and a somatic practitioner. She is seen as one of the most exciting exponents of Bharatanatyam, working both ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ its traditions. An inspiring performer, dance maker, teacher and curator who has focused on integrating dance, education, somatic and contemplative practices into her work.  

She is the artistic director of Beeja, a London based dance theatre company. Beeja has extended and expanded the boundaries of a traditional dance form, to make dance more appealing accessible and inclusive. As artistic director of Beeja, Anusha has choreographed a wide range of performances and collaborated with artists from a variety of disciplines to create cutting edge work that is accessible, entertaining and thought-provoking. Beeja has created work for stage, museums, hospitals, and other non-conventional spaces. Beeja also curates and presents Dance Festival Croydon, a festival of contemporary dance in Croydon and the Dance stage for Croydon Mela along with her co-director Vipul Sangoi, a designer, photographer and film-maker. It has also curated the Big Dance Bus and Peace Festival in parks in Croydon. 

 
 

Anusha was the Program Director for Dance India 2008-2010, an International South Asian Dance Summer School at Lowry in Manchester, produced by Milapfest, a Liverpool based South Asian Arts organisation. She was Subject Leader for Bharatanatyam at the CAT (The Centre for Advance training) program in Birmingham from 2008-2016 and Director of Yuvagati from 2016 to 2018. As a performer and an artist, she continues to be associated and works with other organisations - Dance Umbrella, Akademi, The Place, South East Dance, and many others in the UK.
