Celebrating International Women's Day with Gnawa, Sufi and Arabo-Andalusian music

In honour of International Women's Day on 8 March, Hind Ennaira will play a special Sufi programme together with members of Amsterdam's Andalusian Orchestra. Born in Essaouira, Morocco, the birthplace of Gnawa art, Afro-Moroccan and desert blues, Hind Ennaira immersed herself in this particular genre of music at a very young age. A world that initially seemed to be accessible only to men. Today, Hind, as one of two gnawiat, is a key figure in the Gnawa music scene. Playing her Guembri instrument, she proves to the world that this traditional Moroccan art form is also for women.

Hind Ennaira was born in Essaouira (Morocco), the birthplace of Gnawa art, Afro-Moroccan and desert blues. At a very young age, she immersed herself in this particular genre of music, a world that initially seemed to be accessible only to men. Today, Hind, as one of two gnawiat, dominates the Gnawa music scene. Playing her Guembri instrument, she proves to the world that this traditional Moroccan folklore is also for women. She formed her own band with which she performs in Morocco and abroad. Hind is known as one of the 'maâlems' who draws crowds with her performances.

The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra (AAO) plays various forms of music from various time periods and styles. From Granada to Baghdad, from the rich Arabo Andalusian repertoire to mystical Eastern music, and from the sophisticated improvisational music of the Arab world to the folk music of the Maghreb. For ten years now, the orchestra has been formed by musicians from home and abroad. Together, they not only keep the traditional Arabo-Andalusian repertoire alive, but also play improvisational music from the Arab world and folk music from the Maghreb. Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with renowned musicians from all kinds of genres, from Arabic (Marcel Khalife and Sami Yusuf) to jazz (Metropole Orkest) and flamenco (Estrella Morente). Besides these repertoires, the AAO is also committed to musical deepening and the orchestra is also on stage with other Andalusian-oriented genres, such as the Malhoun, (Sanaa Maharati). Besides Andalusian repertoires, the AAO also specialises in Eastern sharqi music.
