Opera about a lesser-known aspect of the Holocaust
For a Look or a Touch (2007) by Jake Heggie is based on the true story of a gay Jewish man who is persecuted during the Holocaust because of his sexual orientation.
For a Look or a Touch tells the moving story of the love and loss of Manfred Lewin, who shares his life with his partner Gad Beck. As the Nazis gain power, Manfred and Gad are faced with the horrible choices they must make to survive.
For a Look or a Touch explores themes of love, sacrifice and the impact of prejudice and discrimination. The opera sheds light on the persecution of gay people in WOII, a lesser-known aspect of the Holocaust. It reminds us of human resilience amid unthinkable circumstances that are painfully relevant today. For a Look or a Touch is a moving and important work that honours and commemorates the history and suffering of LGBTQIA+ people before, during and after the Holocaust.
