Gnawa Festival collects 10.000 euro for survivors Moroccan earthquake

Gnawa Festival took over The Hague for its yearly festival last weekend, but pure festival joy was overshadowed by the devastating earthquake in Morocco. The festival organization turned the festival into a charity event by donating  a revenue of almost 10.000 euro to aid organizations helping those affected.

All participating theatres will donate their revenue to the Dutch Red Cross. The past weekend, Algerian collective Lemma performed in Korzo, with also Tamikrest playing in PAARD and with a special Kaseko/Gnawa-show in Het Nationale Theater. The festival closed off with a performance of Hind Ennaira and the Amsterdams Andulisch Orkest in Amare.

Festival director Mustapha Barbouch never thought about canceling the festival. 'The concerts in these theatre halls are an opportunity to come together in an awful time. We have to support each other and face this disaster.' A part of Morocco was hit by an earthquake last Friday. More than 2.500 people died and there are still a lot of persons missing. You can donate to the Dutch Red Cross via Giro 6868.
