Visual theatre as a moving painting
In a landscape of dancing pieces of fabric, plastic bags and floating cubes, two endearing figures wander around. They have long since lost the battle against the wind but refuse to give up. How do we actually do that? Deal with something that is fertile but also destructive? In Tochtgat we see draped fabrics on the paintings of Rubens that almost seem to come to life. Sometimes it gets very serious and then again you are laughing out loud. Life? Life! Welcome to the mental playground of Jef and Peter.
The work of Jef Van Gestel & Peter Vandemeulebroecke knows few adult rules. It’s full of absurd humour, alienating poetry and boundless fantasy. When you see their productions, you wonder where mime turns into visual art and where the boundaries lie of this form of expressive theatre.
