Theater voor Keti Koti - Esmée Begemann

Curated by Esmée Begemann
Duration 120 min

Keti Koti Kumpulan

Like last year, Esmée Begemann is curating a program with dance, music, a keynote and food in Korzo around Keti Koti. Departing from her Indian background, her research this year will again focus on the question of what Keti Koti can mean within the Indian/Moluccan/Indonesian community. In doing so, this year she wants to delve deeper into the role that solidarity can play between the different communities.

Ketikoti is a holiday of Surinamese origin, annually on July 1, celebrating the abolition of slavery. The name comes from Sranantongo and means "chains broken. June 30 is the National Remembrance Day.
Between the colonial and slavery histories in Suriname (the West) and the former Dutch East Indies (the East) there are many differences, but also certain similarities.

Esmée invites you in collaboration with the Indisch Remembrance Center and Korzo to come together on June 30 and, through dance, music and a keynote, to engage in a dialogue that is still rarely taking place between the two communities.

Cheroney Pelupessy (dancer and choreographer) opens the afternoon with her dance duet Nasib Katong Dua together with Jefta Tanate (dance) and Tom van Wee (music) in which two descendants of mixed descent search for their own identity. Both dancers are partly of Dutch, partly Indonesian or Moluccan descent.

Reza Kartosen-Wong (writer, media and cultural scholar, lecturer at the UvA) will open a conversation among several speakers with a keynote reflecting on the similarities between the different histories of slavery and the question of solidarity.

Jose Tojo (theater maker and founder Kula Skoro) will perform with percussion and dance and talk about his background in Maroon culture.

In addition to the main program, there is a context program in Korzo in which you are invited to explore the intersections in your own identity. What can we learn from ourselves and each other if we are more aware of this? How do we move through the world, between privilege and marginality?

The fate of the new generations of Indonesians and Moluccans, is far from home. Fate has determined that we do not know our future. When will we see our own country? The fate of our ancestors has provided for us to live well in someone else's country. Will we find our home here? Fate will determine.

The dance performance "Nasib Katong Dua" is a vulnerable duet between Cheroney Pelupessy and Jefta Tanate that revolves around the search for identity and recognition. The two dancers use their similarities and differences to meet and support each other in their journey.
