The Space Between Us

Duration 60 min

Amsterdam-based theater company DEGASTEN believes everyone deserves the space, time, attention, and freedom to create and perform. Their performances are grounded in the real-life experiences of young people, giving audiences a window into the world of Gen Z. And what is this generation without the voices of young people with intellectual disabilities? Exactly: incomplete. That’s why Theater Lebelle brought their talented performers into this production.

In The Space Between Us, the focus is on something that connects all generations but feels different for today’s youth: how close we want to be and are able to be to each other. Drawing in and pushing away, holding on and letting go—it’s an endless game that can never be fully mastered yet continues to fascinate.

For this production, the young performers collaborated with makers Sem Jonkers and Adanma Okoro.

DEGASTEN was born twelve years ago in Amsterdam. They create theater productions in hyper-diverse ensembles, with young people aged 13 to 31. Diversity and inclusion aren't something they ‘do’. They’ve been part of their DNA from day one. You can see and feel it in their stories, their methods, their organizational makeup, and in the young performers, audiences, and partners they collaborate with closely.

DEGASTEN’s strength lies in nurturing young talent within deeply personal contexts, where individual experiences, co-creation, real-life encounters, and continuous exploration take center stage. They always perform and create through a mix of amateurs, professionals, and social partners, resulting in performances and experiences with a distinctive, original artistic voice.
