Korzo
Maker Faizah Grootens
Duration 25 min

How do you keep the softness in your body in an increasingly hardening world? How do you continue to open yourself up to others, even when you disagree?

Choreographer and Leo Spreksel Award-winner Faizah Grootens explores the power of tenderness in Tender Resistance. Her dancers engage physically with each other in which their approaches sometimes seem very different. How does one offer tender resistance? Inspired by speeches and interviews by actress Viola Davis and the sensitivity of Papiamentu, Faizah explores how complicated it is to remain vulnerable in a world full of conflict and harshness.

Tender Resistance is the first work Faizah makes for Korzo as an artist-in-residence. Vulnerability, as well as temperament and fluid movements, run as common threads through her work. She previously made While you're here - Tanten bo t'aki for Here We Live and Now 2022, and last year she presented the full-length performance Corpus Criolla at CaDance Festival.

Immediately after the performance, the presentation of the Leo Spreksel Award will take place. An additional ticket is not required for this. The Leo Spreksel Award was created in 2018 at the departure of then Korzo director Leo Spreksel, as a tribute to his commitment to Dutch dance and his passion for talent development.  This incentive award is presented to a young dance maker every two years by the former Korzo director. The award consists of a residency in Korzo under the guidance of Leo Spreksel. Faizah Grootens won the award in 2023.
