Music is part of who we are. In SOUNDS, it becomes a physical experience, where dance, sound and energy come together as one. Choreographer Donna Chittick blends Caribbean and African influences with hiphop, taking us on a journey back to her roots in Sint Maarten.
Four dancers and one singer bring rhythms and movement to life, deeply connected to identity, memory and community.
Soca, an energetic Caribbean music style, and konpa from Haiti, with its flowing rhythms and melodies, form the musical foundation alongside African sounds. Through vibro-belts and rhythmic lighting, these sounds are not only heard, but also felt, seen and experienced, making the performance accessible for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences.
SOUNDS celebrates Afro-Caribbean heritage and echoes the strength of generations before, during and after the Transatlantic slave trade, with music as a universal language.

For Deaf and hard of hearing visitors, SOUNDS offers vibro-belts: wearable belts worn around the waist that translate music into tangible vibrations. This allows you to experience the rhythms and energy of the performance in a physical way.
Before the performance, an interpreter will be present to explain how the vibro-belts work, so you can begin the show feeling comfortable and prepared.

BackBone is a hip-hop dance company creating work that is sharp, urgent, and rooted in hip-hop values: intensity, authenticity in performance, grounded choreography, and bold storytelling. Their productions are raw and profound, designed to spark the audience’s curiosity and challenge them to reflect on their role in society.
BackBone was founded in 2012 by Alida Dors. After Alida moved to Theater Rotterdam, Donna Chittick stepped in as artistic director at the end of 2022.
