What do you get when you mix Sufi poetry, spiritual traditions and Arabic singing techniques with influences from hip-hop, R&B and electronic music? Shakuar.
Shakuar brings together vocalists Shishani and Karima el Fillali, artists with a deep sense of intimacy, who create enchanting and transformative music. The performance combines African and European musical styles, such as gnawa, R&B and hip-hop, with contemporary electronic styles. As the vocalists alternate between the languages Oshiwambo, Darija, Arabic, English, French and Spanish and their voices intertwine, the concepts of identity and culture are challenged.
Shakuar takes you on a journey through different realms; from spiritual to secular, from loneliness to the desire to celebrate together, and from cultural boundaries to boundlessness.
In 2020, Shakuar collaborated with The Hague Residentie Orkest with whom they released the extraordinary live album Live at Gnawa Festival.
