Korzo
Maker Camiel Corneille
Duration 50 min

The body fights to transcend itself. In SENESCENCE, Korzo maker in residence Camiel Corneille shows a man struggling with growth and decay. He is unable to accept the transformation of his body. Is transcience really inevitable?

Camiel lays out the duality of humankind in a combination of virtuouse physicality and a kinetic installation: the effort it takes to perform and the inevitable decay that comes with it.

SENESCENCE is the scientific term for cellular aging and is Camiel’s attempt to battle his transcience and to find question the ideal of social engineering. Artists also get older and the impact is even bigger when your body is a large part of your artistic work.

Camiel Corneille is a Dutch artist and circus maker. He stands out in the circus field with his multidisciplinary approach and diverse works that explore our humanity. Starting in 2025, he will be one of the new artists in residence at Korzo.

The theme of what it means to be human plays a large role in his most recent work. Camiel investigates the human condition in relation to our creations (machines and technology) and our environment (intimacy), hoping to find an answer to his question. He invites his audience to engage with the imagery in a completely different way and to join him in his quest. Circus, to Camiel, is the ultimate tool for this exploration, as he sees its potential to make the impossible seem possible. Read more about Camiel here.
