ROVIRA 100: A CELEBRATION OF THE UNKNOWN

Info Language no problem
Duration 75 min

The forgotten father of the Argentine tango.

SONICO. "Five Brussels-based musicians are returning from a tour across Argentina and Chile. They are determined to show us why Educardo Rovira was way ahead of his time with his tango 50 years ago. Rovira had guts. He took on the prevailing idea that classical music had more value than tango. How exactly? By combining exactly those two. SONICO brings the tango to life like no other, a feast of recognition for seasoned listeners and a pure lesson in Latin American music history for new ears.

SONICO is the only band in the world over the past 10 years that brings Rovira's music back to life on the stage. With Lysandre Donoso on bandoneón, Alejandro Schwarz on guitar, Stephen Meyer on violin, Ivo de Greef on piano and Ariel Eberstein on double bass. Like a group of musicologists, these performers dig deep into the lesser-known history of tango. In search of hidden recordings and forgotten archives from the 1950s and onwards, they put together new musical puzzle pieces, through collaborations with ballet companies and orchestras. From the Concertgebouw in Bruges to Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall: as an audience, you won’t forget Rovira, or SONICO for that matter, anytime soon.
