Rizoom Atelier

Duration 150 min

Where new music dares to begin

What happens when you give six promising sound artists the chance to dive deep into musical exploration? You’ll experience the results at Rizoom Atelier. With workshops, installations, new musical instruments, and performances, this is a fresh and creative look at life today. Descend into this underground network where ingenious ideas sprout and branch out.

Throughout the Korzo building, Rizoom artists bring us sound art inspired by radio waves, natural science, political activism, and musical explorations beyond conventional boundaries. Laurence Gaudreau, Myra-Ida van der Veen, Roman Tkachenko, Sól Ey, Christy Westhovens, and Cosmic Bride (Natalja Chareckaja) will share their research, previews, and works in progress with you.

It’s an afternoon full of discovery and connection. At Rizoom Atelier, you’ll meet emerging artists, professional leaders in the field, and representatives from organizations in the contemporary music scene. Get ready for inspiring conversations and a wealth of creative exchange. Tomorrow begins today.

Cellist, composer, and improviser Laurence Gaudreau investigate sound beyond binary thinking in this semi-improvised performance. In Androgynous Music, we see her explore how ideas about masculinity, femininity, and non-binarity can be heard in music. A physical, musical space emerges where discomfort is finally allowed, and your openness is invited.

Cosmic Bride invites you to a unique encounter between human and living organism. In this work-in-progress performance, she connects her body to mycelium—the underground network of fungi—via biosensors. Electrical activity is transformed into sound in a continuous negotiation, with neither side in control. Descend into this fragile and mysterious exchange between composition and decay, life and death.

Multimedia performer and singer Myra-Ida van der Veen explores the anatomy of the voice. What happens when technology amplifies, dampens, distorts, or changes our voice? During her Rizoom research, she experiments with machines that tap on singerslips, creating rhythms and textures through interruption and silence. Witness this fascinating exploration of the voice as a physical, constantly transforming instrument.

In Public Attention, Roman Tkachenko transforms the theater into a rehearsal space for collective resistance. Not with protest signs, but through sound. Drawing on his research into sonic politics, his performers experiment with breath, voice, simple rhythms, and low-tech instruments.

Inspired by protest songs, childrens songs, and tactical cadences, you as the audience are invited to make yourself heard. Join this shared sonic gesture in which you explore together with the performers how sound can reclaim public space.

Note: as part of Roman Tkachenkos performance, a small filming drone will fly above the performers. Roman is a certified drone pilot, and all necessary safety measures are taken. No strobe lighting will be used.

Composer and new media artist Sól Ey creates immersive works: sound, movement, light, and body fuse . In Silver, Stones and Sparkles, you enter a circular kinetic sound sculpture, like a giant tambourine. It is a resonant space where you can hide from the outside world. Step into this sparkling environment to listen together and participate in a playful game with clinking metal sounds.

Every day we move through an invisible sea of radio signals, from Wi-Fi to satellites, Bluetooth to cell towers. But who builds these networks, and how do they affect our freedom? In this performance, Christy makes a first attempt to reveal this hidden electromagnetic landscape by making it audible. In doing so, he seeks to reclaim technology through curiosity.

Rizoom is more than just a stepping stone. It’s a talent development program supported by a network of organizations deeply rooted in the Dutch new music scene. A collaboration between Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, Korzo, de Doelen, Intro in Situ, Gaudeamus, November Music, and Asko|Schönberg. By pooling our strengths, expertise, and networks, we support, programme, and facilitate.

It’s the place where new ideas grow, experiments sprout, and fresh sounds develop in every direction. Korzo is one of the founding partners of this initiative, supporting the artistic and professional growth of makers in the early years of their careers.
