Play! Workshops

Duration 120 min

Discover New Ways of Listening

Sometimes you hear the music, but are you really listening? PLAY is a workshop series for musicians and music lovers who want to explore the phenomenon of “listening” and (want to) make music themselves. Joseph Puglia and Cristiano Viviani guide you through the landscape of listening and, together with a small group of participants, explore how audiences and performers collaborate and how we can connect with one another through music.

In PLAY, you are challenged to reflect on our collective ownership of sound. During the workshop sessions, you will delve into compositions from different genres and periods. You are also invited to present your own work to the other participants. You will engage in listening meditations and explore the boundaries of sound by studying compositions created for non-musicians.

By purchasing this bundle ticket for €25, you gain access to all four sessions.

Joseph Puglia (1984) is constantly searching for new approaches and sounds on the violin. He is praised for the “astonishing, magical moments” he creates during concerts. As De Volkskrant wrote after one of his shows: “On the way home, you notice that your ears have opened—even the familiar sounds of the city seem different.”

Joseph teaches at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, where he researches how active audience participation can create deeper musical connections in concerts. He finds inspiration in the music and practice of Pauline Oliveros.

Cristiano Viviani (1988) is an Italian multi-instrumentalist, composer, music theorist, and teacher specializing in improvised music. He graduated in Jazz & Improvised Music (2014) and Music Education (2016). Cristiano teaches in several departments at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, focusing on creative music-making in collaborative settings and interdisciplinary projects between music, dance, and visual arts.

He also holds a degree in philosophy and gives lectures on various topics exploring the meaning of music-making in contemporary cultures. He began his career as a performing musician in 2003 and has led a range of projects in different styles, from a violin–guitar duo to a large ensemble.
