An ode to musical troublemakers and outsiders

“When someone is in a state of despair, it means that he still believes in something.” – Dmitri Shostakovich

Surely listening to Bach’s music, you can’t tell that he’s never been in New York?” – Valentin Sylvestrov

The Matangi Quartet presents their new album Outcast in Korzo. The album contains string quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke, and Valentin Sylvestrov. With their work, that was designated ‘avant-garde’ or ‘western’, they stuck out their necks and risked their careers – or in the case of Shostakovich under Stalin – even their personal freedom. Shostakovich, so the story goes, had a packed suitcase at the ready in case he would be arrested by the KGB. Alfred Schnittke was also hounded by his own government; his work was looked upon with suspicion and performances were regularly thwarted. The Ukrainian composer Valentin Sylvestrov, in addition to his musical oeuvre, is known for his political commitment against the leaders of the former Soviet Union and contemporary Russia.

Outcast is an ode to musical troublemakers and outsiders; to composers who wrote music that dangerously went against the prevailing tastes of the regimes under which they lived.
