How do we experience things we cannot see?
During this concert, you take your seat in the dark, giving you a sense of what it might be like to live with a visual impairment. Upon entering, eye masks are provided so you can experience the work purely through listening. This not only makes the evening unique but also invites you to reflect on how much we rely on sight, and how different the world feels when that sense is momentarily taken away. Extra staff will be present to guide visitors and assist with entering the hall.
Try explaining to someone next to you what the colour red sounds like. Or describe what green looks like to someone who cannot see. Composer Pete Harden and pianist Saskia Lankhoorn envelop us in darkness with Lightness. Follow the remarkable story of an exhibition by the celebrated artist Cézanne that was lost, yet vividly described.
It will be an evening filled with music influenced by alternative sounds, folk, and dreamy pop. The concert is carried by Hollands Collectief and Het Oorzaak, a choir of singers with visual impairments. They form the heart of this experience. Through their voices, presence and unique perspective, they open a world where listening takes centre stage and the senses find new meaning.
Avenue Azure is the duo Saskia Lankhoorn & Pete Harden, known for their atmospheric ‘almost-songs’. Saskia is the new classical music programmer at Amare and was once hailed as a virtuoso in contemporary music by the New York Times. Pete Harden won prizes as a composer at a young age (Pro-Arte Guitar Trio Composition Competition) and founded Ensemble Klang together with Saskia, among others. Lightness is Avenue Azure's latest performance.
Lightness is a co-production of Big Sing Festival (Haarlem) and Stichting Ensemble Klang. Music: Pete Harden & Avenue Azure Dramaturgy & text: Tomas Serrien Performers: Avenue Azure, Hollands Collectief, Choir of singers with a visual impairment
