A farewell like a springboard
We have lift off! Rutkay Özpinar has been a maker at Korzo for more than 10 years and now the time has come to leave. He says farewell with a grand and personal programme. During this night, Rutkay presents three works – Something about Something, Shifting Spaces and Johnny Montgomery – where you’ll get to know Rutkay’s alter ego Johnny Montgomery and two brand new works. A farewell like a springboard to the future.
The premiere on the 14th will be a festive one with a dresscode-advice by Rutkay himself: ‘gala extravagance, wear something flamboyant that you rarely wear!’ After the show on the 15th, there’ll be an afterparty in the foyer where Rutkay will play some of his favorite music.
He is bursting with self-confidence. He is hilarious. He is scary. He is extra. He is made to go crazy. He is Johnny Montgomery.
And then there’s Rutkay Özpinar. Johnny Montgomery is the Mr. Hyde to his Dr. Jekyll, an alter ego he has never shown to the world and a person he hasn’t (yet) become. Johnny has always been part of Rutkay and it’s about time that everyone gets to know him. With Johnny by his side, Rutkay Özpinar can embrace his multitudes and flourish completely, both as an artist and human being.
Johnny Montgomery is a spectacular and riveting solo by Rutkay Özpinar, a personal work wherein he shares his doubts, struggles and victories.
Dance expresses itself in a way that cannot be put into words or understood. What exactly is being told with these movements, and what message is being conveyed?
Rutkay Özpinar believes that dance speaks for itself. The magic lies precisely in the wonder that cannot be expressed in words. Therefore in Something about Something the meaning or story is left to the interpretation of the audience.
A group of dancers find themselves in a large space. The spaciousness entices them to play a game. Rutkay created Shifting Spaces for a class of students from the Codarts Lyceum in Rotterdam. In this work he experiments with the dancers' use of spaces.
