The dance stimulates encounter, seeing another in yourself, and yourself in another. It's about giving yourself space, and how you relate to the other person and your environment.
KÓW
With KÓW, Gronings choreographer Mohamed Yusuf Boss exposes what happens during (first) contact moments between people. For this dance performance, Mohamed was inspired by the thinking of writer and social activist James Baldwin, who is known for his astute look at racial, sexual and social inequalities. Who do you choose to be in contact with someone else?
“You have to decide who you are and force the world to deal with you, not with its idea of you.” -James Baldwin
AFAR
With AFAR, Mohamed Yusuf Boss creates a choreography especially for an imposing space: the Nieuwe Kerk. This building is used daily by very diverse communities and is home to a great wealth of stories.
AFAR means four in Somali and therefore focuses on four elements: dance, music, the church and the people who use this space. Based on the African philosophy Ubuntu ('I am because we are'), Mohamed entered into a conversation with the communities in and around the church. With AFAR he looks beyond our differences and searches for what connects us as people.
