Korzo's Sunday Sessions

The Korzo Sunday Sessions are inspiring afternoons where the audience comes together for paneltalks and performances that are the starting point for good conversation, combined with some food. A little like a night out with friends on a Friday evening, but with the facilities of a theatre auditorium. This edition is extra special, since we’re celebrating Blach Achievement Month and teaming up with Orisun Studio.

Orisun Studio is a foundation that highlights talented creatives. Their concept Homegrown was founded to offer a platform for emerging talent. In Homegrown Sessions by Orisun Studio, they highlight the talent of musicians and take the sessions to the next level with beautiful set design and cutting edge fashion. This will be their first live event on location with a live set by the duo Illnoledge. Next to Illnoledge, hiphop dance collective Backbone will show an exclusive preview of Mirrors, a work that will premiere in Korzo February 15th. Nike Ayinla (Orisun Studio) will be the host of this event and of course there’ll also be delicious food!

lllnoledge is a duo consisting Steve Hartley and Mill Voyance. They were born into a family with a rich musical and artistic background descending from the West Indies and Suriname. Born to (father) Hartley Robbie Iwan Linger and (mother) Shireen Maria Linger-Echteld. Their parents were active artists/musicians in their early years before starting a family together. Music and spirituality were the main components at home. Their parents main focus was to raise their children with a strong sense and awareness about the connection of those two components to have a firm fundament in life as in general.

In 2006, the brothers formed Illnoledge. It’s an acronym for: Intuitive, Limitless, Liberal-minded, New-fangled, Original, Luminous, Empowering, Dedicated, Genuine Elevators. They started writing songs and making productions strictly for the art of it and to school themselves. As a result they’ve developed their own style which they call ‘Akan Fu’. It contains elements of Afrobeat, Latin, Jazz and Reggae. Illnoledge stands for enlightenment. With a purposeful approach to art in general they mainly focus to enlighten themselves in order to trigger others to enlighten themselves.

Homegrown is a multidisciplinary creative platform specialising in live music video productions. Homegrown Sessions are characterised by an aesthetic fusion of set design, cutting edge fashion styling and the showcasing of visual art - all brought to life in the context of a live performance by an upcoming musical artist.

Founded in late 2018 in The Netherlands, Homegrown is one of the projects under the umbrella of production house Orisun Studio. The vision for the platform was conceived by founders Nike Ayinla and Nas Hosen out of a desire to unite a community of artists, creatives, producers and likeminded individuals in cooperative creation and talent development.

Orisun Studio produces projects to effectively support a variety of artistic talents and shows how creatives can shape our future. We are a producing organization that connects different art forms that are less exposed within the current infrastructure. We focus on a new crop of artists who are underexposed by platforms in the current local musical landscape, namely hip-hop, new wave, post-modern music, soul and R&B. We also have a strong focus on design, in particular fashion and (interior) design. We combine these art forms together to bring everything to a new level and thus appeal to a new target group. Due to our diverse and young network we can create innovative and unique (video) productions and events that shares new narratives.

Hiphop dance collective Backbone is known for its relevant and urgent work, with the core values of hiphop as roots. Intensity, sincerity of the performance, groundedness in the choreography and daring stories are key. Backbone-productions are raw, profound and try to get the audience to think about their position in our society.

Backbone was founded by Alida Dors in 2012. When Alida joined Theater Rotterdam, Donna Chittick took over as artistic leader.

Mirrors shows the chaos that erupts because of all the digital information humans have to digest every day. You have to be up-to-date and positive, because if you’re not, you’re a sourpuss. There seems to be no space for positive feedback, it’s a world without nuance. We’re taking our online way of dealing with things to the non-digital world. What happens when we speak face to face again, when we see each other, touch each other? What’s it like when the distance that the digital world creates, shrinks and we need each other desperately?
