Pride, shame, suffering, honour, confusion? What feelings come to the surface when we talk about where we come from, with roots in Indonesia, the Moluccas, and the Netherlands? In the multi disciplinary program KETURUNAN (Bahasa Melayu – offspring), a story is told from the perspective of a number of descendants of ancestors who made an eventful journey concerning their relationship with the Netherlands. In KETURUNAN, this history is taken along, and a connection is made to the present, younger generations.

This art project is about connection in the broadest sense: between creator and performer, between stories, between dance styles, between artist and audience, and an internal connection between different ethnicities that are very much connected. While the current generation(s) have not experienced this dissatisfaction of complex history themselves, they do feel the pain of our (for) parents. The research process explores the ways in which those connections are simultaneously alive.
"My vision is to produce a multidisciplinary art project in the form of a photo reportage, documentary, and dance performance. To get closer to my Moluccan/Indian culture through personal stories and experiences of other descendants. This research creates connection and community. Throughout this process, we will confront the painful, yet rich history we carry with us and be able to express it in different art forms as a tribute to all our ancestors." - Cheroney Pelupessy
