A programme of arts, encounter and dialogue
Keti Koti Kumpulan is a unique meeting place where the arts, stories and conversations deepen understanding and broaden perspectives on themes such as identity, diaspora and collective memory. In a diverse and layered programme, audiences engage in dialogue with one another, with makers and with performers. Together, we explore how colonial history continues to shape the present, what solidarity means, and how it can grow within and between different communities.
Esmée Begemann curates this programme at Korzo around Keti Koti. Drawing on her Indo-Dutch background, she explores what Keti Koti can mean within the Indo-Dutch, Moluccan and Indonesian communities. This year, she deepens this research by focusing on the role solidarity can play between these communities, and how shared as well as differing colonial histories can intersect and reinforce one another.
Be moved by spoken word by Tyler Koudijzer, dance by Yasmin Diktaş, a Balinese dance workshop by Arnaud Kokosky Deforchaux, a spatial installation by artist DARSAY, and conversations led by historian Lara Nuberg.

Makers
Keti Koti, literally meaning “broken chains”, is commemorated annually on 1 July and marks the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles.
Although this remembrance originates in the history of slavery in the Trans-Atlantic regions, it also raises questions within communities with roots elsewhere. How do we – as people from the Indo-Dutch, Moluccan and Indonesian communities, each with our own histories of colonialism and slavery – relate to this day? And what does solidarity require of us?
