Awasa meets hiphop | resistance meets resistance
We leave the Prinsenstraat behind us for just a moment and wander to the Surinamese village of Bendikonde. This is where Georgetina, the kabiteni (captain), is at the helm. We hear her singing voice echo through the Surinamese interior and follow the stories about life along the river. Stories about her community that once resisted slavery there on the river. We feel how Georgetina balances between tradition and the fast-paced world of today. In this way, she safeguards the future of her community. KABITENI is packed with visuals, Surinamese Awasa dance and Awasa rhythms and explosive hip hop. Discover how the resistance of the past is reflected in today's hip hop culture.
KABITENI was created by hip hop theatre pioneers Lloyd Marengo (choreography) and Marjorie Boston (direction). B-Boy Dietrich Pott assisted them. In 2022, Lloyd won the Golden Swan and Dietrich the Young Swan. We see Georgetina come to life thanks to Angelika Naingie, known for the theatre performance 'Sporen van Haar'. But the other performers have also made their mark. For example, Kevin Thompson previously played for the National Ballet and ISH, Djinti Sullivan was given the leading role in 'Giselle' by the Toneelmakerij & Dox, and Ciara Hiwat won the BNG Bank Prize.
Lloydscompany – trailblazer for the hip hop community
Lloyd Marengo is one of the founders of the Rotterdam Hiphophuis, and he has worked with Scapino Ballet and Conny Janssen Danst, among others. Under the flag of the Rotterdam Lloydscompany, and especially the work of Lloyd himself, dancers, emerging urban makers and the underground battle scene come together.
