An ode to the Black man in the Western world
How to clutch onto hope in an environment that doesn’t accept that people of color have the same rights? Five performers search for their identity and relationships with each other. What does it mean to be father and son? Which traumas do you pass on and which do you let go of? How do you shape your own vision and values as a son with a father who grew up in a complex world in which he could not fully be himself?
Dalton Jansen based JAH! on the story of his own father, who came to the Netherlands as a young Curaçaoan immigrant in the 1990s and raised his son based on Rastafarian ideologies.
With JAH! Dalton hopes to dismantle stereotypes: being a Rastafarian means more than just dreadlocks, cannabis and reggae. It is a lifestyle of peace, love and harmony. Rastas feel more connected to nature, the earth, the community and the spiritual. What can we learn from this in these times when polarization and individualism are rampant? JAH! is both an ode to the Black man in a Western world and a celebration of fatherhood.

Twelve Dutch theatres are joint coproducers for theatre and dance makers under the name the Coproducers. A development role for the theatre, production contribution and guaranteed playing times for performers. The Coproducers was founded in 2013 to bring supply and demand closer together and to fill the gap left by the subsidy cut on production houses. Every year, the Coproducers support two new flat-floor productions: this year, JAH! is one of those productions.
