A tenth anniversary that makes us nostalgic

In Bloom celebrates its 10th edition! The concert series is hosted by Korzo and curated by Hague-based composer/performers James Alexandropoulos-McEwan and Lise Morrison. Lise is now the sole curator and she – in collaboration with Korzo - presents a showcase of young musicians, performers and composers, featuring works developed by their peers from the music and art scene of The Hague.

This edition focusses on the theme of nostalgia with performers like Zewar, Tiziano Teodori and Kaðlín Ólafsdóttir.

Formed out of their shared love for 90’s triphopband Portishead and experimental electronics, new duo Zewar (Cristiana Vignatelli and Simone Sacchi) blend live processing, haunting vocals, hypnotic samples, Italian folksongs, and drones to a layered music that truly becomes a sonic exploration.

Cristiana Vignatelli is a vocalist and multi-disciplinary artist based in The Hague, pushing creative explorations in both fields. As a vocalist, her practice spans from electronics to jazz and improvisation, constantly experimenting with new sounds. Simone Sacchi is an electronic composer and sound technician based in The Hague. With a passion for exploring different forms of sound design, Sacchi has developed his expertise in field recording, non-standard synthesis, noise and club music.

Tiziano Teodori is an electroacoustic composer and flute player based in The Hague, who is active both as a performer in Dutch baroque and classical orchestras and as a composer and music producer. Drawing from his studies in both baroque and modern flute performance, and also sound design for cinema, most of his work is the result of experimentations over the intersections between sound synthesis and manipulation of recorded sounds. Tiziano will present Continuum, an almost-concerto for ‘acoustic instrument’-in this version the flute-and modular synthesisers after LePleurs by M.deSainte Colombe. Continuum uses a live electronics setup to process and give new meaning to the founding elements of music from the Renaissance or Baroque era.

Kaðlín Ólafsdóttir is a composer based in The Hague, and a recent graduate from the Institute of Sonology. Her work reflects on deterioration by drawing parallels between the imperfections of memory and technology. Combining old cassettes with field recordings and live instruments she creates soundscapes, installations and live performances that focus on nostalgia and deterioration by bringing the imperfections of the cassetteplayer to light and connecting it to the imperfections of memory. She will present music from her 2022 album Hlj ó ð firrin (meaning ‘sound alienation’- or the way in which neighbouring sounds become less similar) , at In Bloom. The album carries a melody between three versions of home, indifferent places and times: amidst the noisy traffic of TheHague, frantic bird song in Eyrarbakki, Iceland, and-in its most vulnerable expression -in Heima- stripped of all outside influence. Together, the three parts travel between homes and ask how much our homes travel with us.
