Everyone knows the feeling of wanting to disappear
A woman, waiting on a deserted platform and a train that rumbles past but doesn't stop. Consider it a bit like an endless stream of thoughts that we as humans all know all too well. It is a famous scene from the modern dance performance Dubbelspoor from 1986 by Beppie Blankert and composer Louis Andriessen. Louis passed away a few years ago and Beppie, together with Caroline Dokter, lovingly tackles the piece again almost 40 years later. Where Beppie once danced young and smoothly, we now delve into her brainwaves. We see her wondering who that second woman on the platform is. We see Beppie dancing a performance in our own Korzo for the very, very, very last time. We bow deeply for that.
When you say Dutch modern dance, you say Beppie Blankert. She created over 40 choreographies, including well-known performances such as Dubbelspoor, Ives and VOLUME 2 and Odyssey. Working for various dance companies at home and abroad, she founded her own group in 1987: Beppie Blankert Dansconcerten. In her work, she combines dance with live music that is often composed especially for her, including by Louis Andriessen and Harry de Wit.
She is inspired by books and visual arts. Her performances have been seen from The Netherlands to the US, Canada to Italy. In addition to her own work, Beppie is committed to the development of modern dance in the Netherlands.
Caroline Dokter (1957) trained in dance, theatre and photography and worked for many years as a dancer, maker, dramaturge, coach and photographer for various companies, including Harlekijn Dans, Stichting Dansproduktie and AYA. She worked intensively with Beppie and made the film Meisie Meisie together with filmmaker Kees Hin. From 2000 to 2024 she was a lecturer and coach at the HKU, where she also conducted research and was involved in international collaborations, such as Quand 3 for the SPRING Festival, inspired by the work of Samuel Beckett.
