Most of us have two ears. Few people know, however, what happens between those two channels. For example, the small difference in pitch and timing between what we hear with our left and right ear, which helps us determine our position within a space.
Because of this difference, the brain creates the illusion of a pulse, which is also called binaural beating. In dreams of airs (2017-18), composer Rozalie Hirs uses this binaural beating to stimulate brain waves normally attributed to states of meditation, sleep/wake patterns or creative processes.
dreams of airs is a unique listening experience in which the audience is exposed to hypnotic accelerations and decelerations in a lounge-like setting. The combination of spoken word, music and visuals stimulates multiple senses at the same time
The spoken word formed the basis of this production: Hirs has been writing and reciting poetry since 1991 and has developed her own reciting style. Moving, digital sculptures by visual artist Boris Tellegen, screened in cooperation with Geert Jan Mulder.
