For the women who are not written into history books
In the intimate dance performance Draagkracht, we are taken into the lives of women from Indonesia, the Moluccas, and the former Dutch East Indies. Women who carried history, but were never recorded in history books. Their stories come uncomfortably close: not spoken, but made tangible through urban contemporary dance infused with influences from Indonesian and Moluccan culture. Gentle, yet powerful.
A dance of carrying, survival, and resistance
As an audience, we follow three female narratives. We meet a woman who remains silent and carries without recognition, while the world around her changes. We follow a woman who resists, organizes, and takes risks in a world that denies her existence. And we meet a woman who creates space through words, by writing, teaching, and bringing change from within.
Draagkracht lets you experience what often remains invisible: the weight passed down from generation to generation, without language, but never without impact. In doing so, Cheroney Pelupessy writes history in her own way, and you are invited to witness it up close.
Cheroney Pelupessy is a choreographer, dancer, and maker with Indonesian and Moluccan roots. In her work, she blends contemporary dance with Indonesian and Moluccan movement languages, exploring how ancestral stories remain stored in the body.
Her first major production, KETURUNAN (2022), explores her own family history and the shared heritage of Indonesian and Moluccan communities in the Netherlands. Through her work, she brings often unheard stories of origin into the spotlight, connecting younger and older audiences and bridging past and present.
