Double Bill: Faizah Grootens & Rutkay Özpinar

During this double bill by Korzo, you will see two contrasting works by two korzo makers: ‘Something about Something’ by Rutkay Özpinar and Tender Resistance by Faizah Grootens.

Something about Something | Rutkay Özpinar

Dance expresses itself in a way that cannot be put into words or understood. What exactly is being told with these movements, and what message is being conveyed?

Rutkay Özpinar believes that dance speaks for itself. The magic lies precisely in the wonder that cannot be expressed in words. Therefore in Something about Something the meaning or story is left to the interpretation of the audience.

Tender Resistance | Faizah Grootens

How do you keep the softness in your body in an increasingly hardening world? How do you continue to open yourself up to others, even when you disagree?

Choreographer and Leo Spreksel Award-winner Faizah Grootens explores the power of tenderness in Tender Resistance. Her dancers engage physically with each other in which their approaches sometimes seem very different. How does one offer tender resistance? Inspired by speeches and interviews by actress Viola Davis and the sensitivity of Papiamentu, Faizah explores how complicated it is to remain vulnerable in a world full of conflict and harshness.

Tender Resistance is the first work Faizah makes for Korzo as an artist-in-residence. Vulnerability, as well as temperament and fluid movements, run as common threads through her work. She previously made While you're here - Tanten bo t'aki for Here We Live and Now 2022, and last year she presented the full-length performance Corpus Criolla at CaDance Festival.

Rutkay knows how to transform aesthetic and technical movement forms from different styles and approach them from a different perspective. His signature consists of various shades of modern dance, Turkish folk dance, classical ballet and hip-hop. A quirky mix, which makes Rutkay impossible to pin down: with him, it is always the intentions that bring dance to life.

Faizah proceeds like a sculptor: by eliminating and leaving out, a pure line remains. That sculptural clarity never becomes predictable, however, because her intuition and her Caribbean roots are the source of the distinctive flow in her work. That combination gives Faizah a layered signature and makes her a promise for the future.
