Two performances that give you wings. As a woman and as the rest of humanity.
Emo - Don't be so hysterical, woman!!!!
Does this sound familiar as a woman? Then here's a good chance that you've had the above sentence thrown at you at some point. Such an utterance makes an impact, and in many instances, women decide to swallow their emotions, to push them away. Choreographer Anne Schuurendonk examines exactly such 'social codes' in her piece Emo. She gazes into a future in which we can finally drop those imposed codes by the wayside. Norms are thrown overboard, judgments are tossed aside and the license to feel and share is fully employed. Dancers Melisa Diktas and Evelien Jansen show us what happens next.
Diep - From rock bottom back to yourself.
Anyone who has ever really hit rock bottom, in the deep recesses of life, knows that it's not all dark and lonely. Such moments can also bring you closer to yourself and others, and make you feel like you may never have before. Dance theatre sisterhood SERIOOS invites you to face your own fears, let them go and see what lies beneath the surface. Meshing hip-hop, House Dance, theatre, driving music, poignant words and dance together in a performance that gets under your skin. Confrontational? Yes! Liberating? Also! But not too heavy, because DIEP gives meaning!
Anne Suurendonk (Amsterdam, 1988) is a choreographer, dancer and teacher. She studied performing dance at the Academy for Theatre and Dance of the Amsterdam University of the Arts. After that, she soon discovered her passion for choreography and over the years developed her unique movement language that, according to experts, really adds new colours to the dance landscape.
As a choreographer, you may know her from her early days at Dansmakers Amsterdam, Over het IJ Festival and later as house choreographer at Danstheater AYA. As a teacher and choreographer, she worked at various dance schools in The Netherlands, as well as projects with Peergroup and DOX. Last year she did a residency with us at Korzo where she researched emotions in dance and laid the foundation for her new performance Emo.
Jasmin Deekman, Fiona Dekkers and Meis Köster are dead serious and incredibly close. With playfulness, rhythm and a deep connection, they seek contact with each other, the audience and the world around them. SERIOOS dances somewhere between hip-hop, House Dance, theatre and society. Their home? Theaters, underground scenes and classrooms – wherever movement can tell a story. On the stage, they translate major life questions and everyday struggles into powerful choreographies and raw emotions. They touch, confront and show what sometimes remains invisible. SERIOOS challenges you to look, feel and perhaps even move along. Whether on the street, in a classroom or on stage – they make life tangible, bearable and above all: danceable.
