Samir sheds light at our incessant longing for our other half
The opera Dido and Aeneas, written around 1688 by English composer Henry Purcell, is a landmark in the history of music as well as in Western culture. The work, inspired by books V and VI from Virgil's Aeneid, focuses on the tragically ceased romance between the two mythical characters, and yet reaches far beyond that. It is by exploring the limits between romantic and spiritual love in this epic work that choreographer Samir Calixto will undertake this new creation’s journey. By shedding light at our incessant longing for our other half - and the curious paradox to our constant state of solitude - this new work will look at love from a larger spectrum. It will confront our limited vision of romantic love versus a broader, universal love which lies in mutual freedom and the understanding of our place within a larger scheme - a theme so recurrent on the choreographer's body of work.
In this new piece, accepting one's inherent solitary state defines a personal journey of becoming a more conscious human being. Two dancers - Calixto himself and Italian dancer Erika Poletto - will venture through this physical journey in which the intensity of dance will unveil what the many shades of what we define as love, in a profound search for its utmost significanc
