Three talented choreographers and three works, selected by icon Conny Janssen
Danslokaal is a yearly project to stimulate talent that was founded by Conny Janssen Danst. Each year, she invites talented makers to create new work with the dancers of the Rotterdam company.
Artistic director Conny Janssen, a leading choreographer in the Dutch field, curates every edition with help from Dansateliers and Korzo. These young makers get the chance to work on their own signature under the wings of this professional company. The end result is quite always a surprising night with three brand new works, made with and for the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst.
The contributors to DANSLOKAAL 12 are:
- Bas van der Kruk (Dansateliers)
- Sarada Sarita (Korzo)
- Charlie Skuy (Conny Janssen Danst)
Korzo, one of the creative partners in DANSLOKAAL, nominates choreographer Sarada Sarita for the twelfth edition of the talent development project. In 2024 she will create new work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst.
Sarada Sarita (1987) is a Dutch/Chilean dancer and choreographer. A pioneer in the Dutch dance scene: she was one of the first that brought voguing and waacking to the Netherlands. She worked with companies like ISH and Het Nationale Ballet. In 2019, she won the prestigious BNG Bank Dansprijs with Christian Yav and Sedrig Verwoert, as well as the ‘Zilveren Krekel’ for her role as witch in GRIMM (a co-production by Junior Company Het Nationale Ballet & ISH). She has been an in-house maker at Korzo since 2021.
From an early age, she practices a wide range of dance styles: from classical ballet to tap dancing, as well as jazz and hip hop. She studied at Lucia Marthas and Peridance Centre of Art & Alignmentunder in New York. She is a creative maker and dancer who possesses tons of charisma, presence and a strong female power. She increasingly embraces these natural qualities and puts them to use in her creative process. During her stay in New York, she immersed herself completely in the dance movements of voguing and waacking, cultures wherein she now finds a home and identity.
These dance subcultures celebrate being different and not following convention. She celebrates difference in her work as a dancer; specifically, to show the human experience in all its different colors and emotions. In 2019, Sarada made a life-changing trip to South America. She reconciled with her indigenous roots and learned in-depth from tribes that are threatened with extinction. This journey granted her a new connection with and appreciation for nature, the concept of ‘the land and the natural way of life and death’.

Conny Janssen selects choreographer Charlie Skuy for the 12th edition of talent development project DANSLOKAAL. She spotted the talented choreographer during the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC) in 2023.
Charlie Skuy is a Canadian choreographer and artist living in the Netherlands. He joined Nederlands Dans Theater in 2018 and created numerous works for the company’s choreographic platform, whilst dancing full time. Charlie is now performing and creating his work independently. His work has earned him awards, such as the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition. For his duet KEVIN he won the Conny Janssen Danst partner Award during the RIDCC 2023, performed with Emmitt Cawley.
Dansateliers, one of the creative partners in DANSLOKAAL, nominates choreographer Bas van der Kruk for the twelfth edition of the talent development project. In 2024 he will create new work with the dancers of Conny Janssen Danst.
In primary school, Bas lip-synced to Madonna, wearing a tied-up white t-shirt and a borrowed blonde wig. Because of this, Bas attended the Havo for Music and Dance at Codarts in Rotterdam, graduated in 2014 as a performing dancer from the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London, and obtained a master’s degree in Applied Ethics (2016) from Utrecht University and in Choreography (2023) from Fontys Academy of the Arts / Codarts. Currently, Bas teaches Dance and Philosophy at Fontys and is active as a creator and performer.
Bas uses movement to bring people together and to bring visual images to life. To give meaning to the moment we share with everyone present. To experience and question something together. To remain curious. This is where philosophy and dance come together for Bas. Some subjects, such as claiming space, makeability, vanity, visibility, understanding, and misunderstanding remain sources of inspiration. How do we ensure that we remain open to what is different? To change? To each other? And preferably with a bit of glitter, fun, and self-mockery.
