Musical performance explores the link between queerness and religion
What does it feel like to let loose while God watches over your shoulder? In the musical performance Confessions, we explore the complex relationship between religion and queer (club) culture through confession stories from members of the gay community. The accompanying music embodies these worlds and stretches their boundaries, from solemn church music to club sounds, from chamber music to burlesque. Discover how Lonelinoise connects queerness and religion, between the “blasphemous” and the divine.
Nightlife as a religious experience
For many people in the queer community, their identity and way of life are still in tension with the norms they grew up with or that continue to surround them. For them, vibrant nightlife often feels like an exhale, a space full of understanding, community, and ecstasy, a near-religious experience that embraces everything God once forbade.
Confessions explores this complexity through confession stories and music by, among others, the versatile composer Rick van Veldhuizen, electronic sound artist Trevor Grahl, pop icon Kate Bush, and the medieval composer Hildegard von Bingen.
In Confessions, you’ll hear Rick van Veldhuizen on live electronics, synths, and vocals, alongside trombonists Andrew Macleod and Sebastiaan Kemner, winner of the Dutch Music Prize 2021.
Lonelinoise is always looking for ways to communicate the power of new music. In addition to performing music at the highest possible level and with great passion, Lonelinoise seeks out sharp programming, storytelling, and presentation formats that place music in the spotlight. Lonelinoise has been heard regularly on major stages such as the Concertgebouw and De Doelen, but also in unexpected locations like the Wadden Sea, an old factory, and a quiet forest lake.
