With Concert in the Dark, all the lights in Korzo’s main hall will be switched off and a musician will perform a full program in complete darkness, without sheet music. In the dark, live music becomes a much more intense listening experience for both audience and performer. Suddenly, you hear nuances in the music that you wouldn’t normally notice. This year, trombonist Sebastiaan Kemner, winner of the 2023 Nederlandse Muziekprijs, takes you into an experience of collective focus, connection, and being fully present in the moment.
The full musical program will be announced soon on this page. Knowing Sebastiaan, he will put the versatility of the trombone on full display.
Trombonist Sebastiaan Kemner is constantly exploring the beauty and versatility of his instrument. He performs worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician, teaches master classes, and actively seeks out unexpected, often boundary-pushing collaborations that lead to new concert programs. As an orchestral musician, he plays with internationally renowned ensembles such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
In 2018, he was appointed professor of trombone at the Royal Conservatoire in the Netherlands.
He is also co-founder and artistic director of the platform Lonelinoise, where he focuses on contemporary classical music and new ways of making it accessible to audiences. Many new works are written for him and he continues to arrange existing repertoire while also rediscovering forgotten music. His concert programs are often praised for their originality and for highlighting the lyrical side of the trombone.
He has received several awards and distinctions, including the Nederlandse Muziekprijs in 2021. He holds a master’s degree in musicology from the University of Oxford and is currently pursuing a PhD as well.
