Dance Where Every Ending Is a New Beginning
In this symbol-rich, pulsating performance from Chandenie Gobardhan, dancers examine ‘time’ through the lens of a core concept from Hinduism: the Trimurti. The ongoing cyle of creation, preservation, and destruction.
In Caught Again in the Net of Rebirth, the Hague-born maker Chandenie weaves us into a layered story where past and present cross paths in ever-changing ways. Because time is never just one thing: it’s now, it’s before, it’s later, with each moment constantly influencing the next. Within that time, every action, every spoken word, and every thought has an impact on a greater whole. Her dancers explore what it means to step outside their ego, blending Bharatanatyam, as well as street and contemporary dance styles.
Can you let yourself go just long enough to let something new in?
Born and raised in The Hague, Chandenie began studying Indian dance at a young age. As the daughter of immigrants from Suriname, she grew up with a deep appreciation for dance, rooted in her Indian heritage. After completing the foundation course at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, she continued her studies at Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts. She continuously explores new ways of moving and develops her own movement language that blends traditions from East and West. Chandenie has performed works by artists including Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Blenard Azizaj, and Ryan Djojokarso, and is frequently in London, where she works on her own forward-thinking, relevant, and refined dance productions.
