Caught Again in the Net of Rebirth

Duration 60 min

In this symbol-rich, pulsating performance from Chandenie Gobardhan, dancers examine ‘time’ through the lens of a core concept from Hinduism: the Trimurti. These three gods form the ultimate reality of creation, preservation, and destruction.

In Caught Again in the Net of Rebirth, the Hague-born maker weaves us into a layered story where past and present cross paths in ever-changing ways. Because time is never just one thing: it’s now, it’s before, it’s later, with each moment constantly influencing the next. Within that time, every action, every spoken word, and every thought has an impact on a greater whole. Her dancers explore what it means to step outside their ego, blending Bollywood, Bharatanatyam, hip-hop, locking, and contemporary dance in wondrous ways.

Can you let yourself go just long enough to let something new in?

Born and raised in The Hague, Chandenie began studying Indian dance at a young age. As the daughter of Surinamese immigrants, she grew up with dance as a deep connection to her Indian heritage.

After finishing the preparatory program at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, she continued her studies at Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts. She constantly explores new ways of moving, crafting a personal movement language that blends traditions from East and West. Chandenie has performed in works by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Blenard Azizaj, and Ryan Djojokarso, and spends much of her time in London developing her own innovative, relevant, and refined dance productions.
