No overcoming of limitations, but focusing on the freedom within
‘The only way out, is in’- Sadghuri Jaggi Vasudev
What’s freedom? It’s a question we in the West usually answer with ‘overcoming our limitations’. But in Indian Philosophy and society, notions of freedom move in a significantly different direction. And that’s what Breathe by dance collective Kalpanarts is all about.
Within Indian Philosophy, freedom is mainly about inner freedom, where individuals do not have to depend on external circumstances to feel free. In Breathe, those facets of freedom come to the fore: breathing space, freedom of movement, spontaneity, but also containment.
Breathe is a visual spectacle that heightens the senses even more with a new composition by Simone Giacomini. Giacomini was inspired for this work by the trance-like oeuvre of Simeon ten Holt. The live music for Breathe is played by Matangi.

Kalpanarts is a contemporary dance collective with a vibrant supporting cast. Choreographer and artistic director Kalpana Raghuraman and her group combine traditional Indian dance urban and contemporary dance to create a hybrid dance vernacular. Indian sources of inspiration are molden and transformed, whereas other traditions and customs from all over the world are also present in this energetic performance. Characteristic is the use of footwork, hand gestures and strong facial expressions, and compelling rhythms that resound like a big beating heart.
