Bodies of Goodbye

Be kind to yourself, before it’s too late

Choreographer and dancer Marijke de Vos knows better than anyone that you only have one body, and you have to take care of it. That’s been her raison d’etre to create Body of Goodbyes with her collective Teddy Shouldn't Smoke. In it, De Vos and musician Laura Nygren (Show Pony) ask the question: why aren't we a little kinder to our own bodies?

All of us are getting older, and this can sometimes be a difficult fact to swallow, especially for dancers and other people who work intensively with their bodies. Dancers and other artists cannot continue to do their work at the same level their entire lives, because sooner or later the body will protest. The same applies to pavers & construction workers – even the most stable office job or the best hobby is often not possible until the age of 90. Body of Goodbyes links this theme to today's performance culture: we always want more and better, but when and how is this attainable at the expense of our body?

Body of Goodbyes takes you on a journey that leads from a difficult relationship with your body, full of conflict, to acceptance and care. A warm, soothing bath with an urgent message: be kind to yourself before it's too late.

Teddy shouldn't smoke, a Rotterdam dance collective, is known for its innovative interdisciplinary performances on current themes such as fear, burnout and sexuality. The company, led by choreographer and artistic director Marijke de Vos, initiates performances that utilize artistic forms of all kinds. Contemporary 'gesammtkunstwerks' that highlight the vulnerable sides of people in this fast and harsh society. Teddy strives to inspire compassion and provide comfort in individualist times.

Marijke de Vos (Vlissingen, 1986) graduated from ArtEZ School of the Arts Arnhem in 2008 with a degree in Dance Maker. Marijke enjoys crossing boundaries in her choreographies. Since 2017, she has been creating performances with Teddy for both theatre and special locations, such as parking garages and neglected office buildings. She is inspired by the natural reaction of the human body to unpleasant and distressing situations, where she constantly plays with the boundary between reality and imagination. Her performances explore emotionality and the dark side of the human psyche. Sometimes with irony, but highly confrontational when need be.
