Virtuoso cellist, pianist & vocalist who spans multiple genres
Right from the get-go, our music program kicks off with a marquee name: none other than Ayanna Witter Johnson: a masterful cello player who enchants audiences all over the world. She seamlessly blends classical music, jazz, R&B.
'As a second-generation Jamaican born in Britain, my music is a body of work that represents, celebrates and pays homage to my ancestral heritage, culture and identity,' Witter-Johnson explains. This approach, along with her spectacular talents, garnered Witter-Johnson collaborations with artists as diverse as Peter Gabriel, Anoushka Shankar, Andrea Bocelli and Jools Holland. She also made her mark as a composer with renowned ensembles such as Ligeti Quartet and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Witter-Johnson has become a fixture who has performed memorable shows on Dutch soil. The love is quite mutual: after shows at North Sea Jazz and Cello Biënnale, she will play at Korzo with new material. Her new album arrives in October, which means we will experience an exclusive as well as work from her appraised 2019 debut LP Road Runner. And, who knows, maybe Witter-Johnson will play her cello rendition of Roxanne, which she recorded in Concertgebouw during the pandemic.
