Not Chopin, but Chopi!
In this performance you see ballet dancer Yentl dance to the music of Matchume Zango. Matchume plays Chopi music from the South of Mozambique. They play that music there with a large group of people, sometimes on 30 wooden xylophones at the same time. This is UNESCO heritage: music that sounds so swingin’ that you can hardly sit still. You feel the power of music and dance, that of old generations, diverse cultures/ And because you’re doing that together with all the other visitors, you feel it deeply resonating in your heart.
This performance is part of the festival De Betovering’s program at Korzo
Yentl van Werdt is a dancer: she studied ballet at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp and contemporary dance at P.A.R.T.S. Yentl creates her own dance performances and dances all over the world, from Belgium to England, Zurich to China. She even participated in the opening show of the Olympic Games in London. Yentl creates dance performances together with musicians, opera singers and children, such as in India where she worked with children from the slums. Her short film Wat als..? won the Eye/Wereld Outlook Prize. As versatile as she is, she also teaches dance to children and young people in Belgium and even in various cities in India.
Matchume Zango is a master of playing the timbila, percussionist, composer and producer from Maputo, Mozambique. He obtained a master's degree in Musical Performance from the University of Cape Town, where he later also taught. Zango received financial support for many of his projects, including his research into indigenous cultural practices in Mozambique, from international organisations such as Pro Cultura, Pro Helvetia, the Goethe Foundation, FUNDAC and Music in Africa.
