The alternate realities of a cinematic trio
The album Alternate Realities by Westside Trio describes a potential of another reality in each song. What would it be like if we all moved to another planet in a while? What if evolution had transpired differently? What does the world look like if you believe it’s flat, or what does the world look like to someone with dementia?
This evening the Westside Trio takes you to the heart of these alternative realities. With their electronic string instruments, special effects and voices they create cinematic music about dreams and today's reality. A self-created world shaped by woodwinds, voice, strings, cables, amplifiers and effect pedals. They compose and improvise everything from soft sweet melodies to groovy distorted electronic noise. Classically trained, experienced in jazz and pop music and always looking for new sounds, the West Side Trio is a unity of unruly extremes.
Westside Trio have invented an entirely new genre for their music: string industrial. This adventurous ensemble processes the sound of their string instruments with electronic effects and sings on top of them. They compose and improvise everything from soft sweet melodies to groovy distorted electronic noise.
Thanks to their broad sound palette and skills as arrangers and composers, the trio can often be heard in collaborative projects, including projects with Jonathan Jeremiah, Margriet Sjoerdsma, Bill Laurance (Snarky Puppy) and Sonja Muda van Hamel. They wrote new music for several silent films for the EYE film museum - including Fritz Murnau's Tabu. The soundtrack was performed with the strings of the Metropole Orchestra at Muziekgebouw aan het IJ.
