Catching the magic of a silent material

We can all fold an airplane out of a piece of paper, but a musical instrument? The Paper Ensemble bridges the space between sculptor and musician and perform their electro-acoustic pieces on instruments made out of paper.

The Paper Ensemble is an ongoing project from Jochem van Tol and Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti. The ensemble builds a sonic world of paper sculptures, meeting electro-acoustic explorations of one-of-a-kind sound artist Ale Hop. Together with percussive punctuations by Frank Rosaly and Paul Koek, The Paper Ensemble hosts this unique collaboration. Expect a sonic fabric woven from the smallest and softest sounds we can hear, in juxtaposition with the brutality of percussion and amplification.

Artist and composer Jochem van Tol (1983) developed a series of instruments and sculptures made of all kinds of different paper. Many of which he found in rural Japan. Together with musician and performer Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti they have realised many performances and exhibited extensively abroad with The Paper Ensemble, especially in Japan amongst artists like Yoko Ono, John Cage, Mamoru, Francis Alys, Yukio Fujimoto, Toshi Ichiyanagi and Ken’ichi Nakagawa. The performances of the Paper Ensemble bridge the worlds between sculptor and musician and show how much there is to discover in the most simple material and how to choose radical consequences from their discoveries.
