Korzo and sustainability
Korzo is deeply rooted in society and is committed to building a better world—not only through talent development but also by prioritizing sustainability. Our goal is to promote sustainable practices and integrate ecological responsibility into all aspects of our operations.
What steps has Korzo taken towards sustainability?
Our building:
- In collaboration with the Municipality of The Hague, which owns our building, we developed a plan to replace our heating and air-handling systems. As a result, Korzo is now completely gas-free as of summer 2024.
- Nearly all windows in the Korzo building have been replaced with BENG glazing (Nearly Energy Neutral Buildings), improving the insulation of our historic office building.
- Almost all of Korzo’s halls are now equipped with LED lighting. In summer 2025, the rest of the building will also be fitted with LED lighting, further reducing our energy consumption.
- Since 2021, 80 solar panels have been installed on the roof of Korzo.
Following the Theatre Green Book:
Korzo has adopted the Theatre Green Book, an initiative developed by British cultural organizations, theatre-makers, and sustainability experts to promote climate-neutral production. It serves as a guide to make our activities more sustainable. We are currently working at the Baseline level, with goals set for reaching the Intermediate level by 2030 and a decision toward the Advanced level by 2035.
Sustainable production:
- We aim to provide vegetarian catering for all artists, except when special requests are made.
- We strive to use reused or recycled materials for costumes, sets, and props, and donate or lend them to other institutions when no longer in use.
- Korzo is open to lending materials and equipment to other theatres and companies. For inquiries, please contact info@korzo.nl.
- On a smaller scale, we have set up a recycling station to facilitate waste separation and encourage energy-conscious behavior, such as switching off lights when leaving a room.
Our goals for 2025:
Starting in 2025, we will be working at the Baseline level of the Theatre Green Book and are committed to the following objectives:
- 50% of all materials used will be reused or recycled.
- 65% of these materials will be preserved for future use through storage or repurposing.
- Avoidance of harmful and non-sustainable materials.
