Korzo and sustainability
Korzo wants to attribute to a better world. We try so by giving makers everything they need to develop themselves, but we also like to excel in the area of sustainability. As Korzo, we want to promote sustainable processes and integrate ecological responsibility in our operation.
Three things we have done so far:
- Implementing the Theatre Green Book
Korzo has adopted the Theatre Green Book, an initiative led by British cultural institutions, theatre makers and sustainability experts to produce art in a carbon-neutral way. The Theatre Green Book serves as the guideline to make our processes more sustainable. It’s our goal to have reached the level Baseline in the autumn of 2024, with further goals for 2030 (level Intermediate) and a resolution towards 2025 (level Advanced).
- Make our building more sustainable
We’ve undertaken several actions to make our building more sustainable:
- We’ve drafted up a plan with the municipality of The Hague – the owners of our building – to replace our heating and air-conditioning systems. This means that Korzo will no longer be using gas. The replacing of these systems will take place in the summer of 2024.
- Almost all of the windows in the Korzo-building have been replaced by BENG-windows (Bijna Energie Neutrale Gebouwen), which means our monumental building is now much better isolated.
Since 2021, Korzo has 80 solar panels on the roof.
- Produce in a sustainable way
These are some actions we’re already implementing or want to implement:
- Our artist catering is vegetarian, with sole exceptions on special request.
- We try to make our costumes, stage designs and props from recycled materials. And if we’re not using them, we’d like to loan them out or give them away.
- We’re open to the idea of loaning props and materials out to other theatres and companies. If interested, send an email to info@korzo.nl.
- On a smaller level, we’ve implemented waste separation and help each other to be conscious of the energy we’re using, whether it’s turning down the heating or switching the lights off whenever we leave the room.
The goals for 2025
Starting in 2025, we’ll be working according to the Baseline-level of the Theatre Green Book. That means that we will commit ourselves to the following targets:
- 50% of the materials we’re using is sourced from recycled materials;
- 65% of these materials can be used in the future, either for storage or reuse;
- We avoid using harmful and non-sustainable materials.
