The Hague talent surprises with contemporary Bharatanayam
Poernima Gobardhan is one of the greatest talents in the Indian dance scene in The Hague. In 2018, she got the opportunity to create new work and discover her own signature. The solo Mātā was the surprising result.
Poernima got her inspiration from Durga Mātā: the female force that opposes external negative forces. In Hinduism, Durga is the creator and destroyer, maintaining justice in all creations. She is often pictured destroying the demon Mahishasura. She is a merciless warrior for morality, looking fierce and frightening. At the same time the Goddess is the embodiment of harmony, protection and kindness. Durga Devi is incorruptible, her true form goes beyond sensory perception.
Poernima explores the possibilities of the Bharatanatyam as a movement language and uses it to tell a story. She brings the twofoldness of Durga into the here and now by letting go of the coded hand gestures and ancient stories to let the Bharatanatyam speak from her own perspective, that of a contemporary young woman.
