Full-length remake of successful research into the relationship between the Waltz and Afro-Caribbean dance styles of Curaçao.

Dancer and choreographer Faizah Grootens was born and raised in Curaçao and moved to the Netherlands when she was 18. These different cultural influences are naturally reflected in her sensitive and rhythmic contemporary choreographies. Her most recent work premiered in winter 2022 during the Korzo/NDT programme Here We Live and Now.

To arrive at her own dance language, Grootens researched the relationship between the Waltz and Afro-Caribbean dance styles from Curaçao (such as the tambú) in 2021. In the resulting contemporary work Corpus Criolla, which means as much as 'Creolised body language', she explores the embodiments and stereotypes that both dance forms entail.

Corpus Criolla provides food for thought on current issues such as stereotyping, identity, culture of shame, conventions and traditions, colonial influences, social idealism and fathoming the relationship between form and content. This fits perfectly with the CaDance '23 theme 'Where Worlds Collide and Connect', which is why we asked the choreographer to bring the revamped version of Corpus Criolla, now as a full-length performance, back on stage with her dancers.

Afterwards, there will be an after talk with the choreographer.

Faizah Grooten's choreographies are characterised by tenderness, accessibility and sensitivity, vulnerability, temperament, infinity, fluid circular movements and polyrhythms of creolised dance forms that emerge in a contemporary form through her Creole body language. The somatic approach to aesthetics ensures that the focus is on the inner experience rather than the form.

Born and raised in Curaçao, she graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts (AHK) and the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba.

In 2022, at the invitation of Korzo and Nederlands Dans Theater, she created a choreography for the Here We Live and Now programme, within which already many great choreographers of the future got their first chances to make new work in The Hague. In recent years, her choreographies have also been shown at Holland Dance Festival, Kalamata Dance Festival and at Skånes Dansteater's Dansfunk Festival, among others. Grooten's work has also been seen in South America. She has already created several contemporary choreographies for Compañía Taller Coreográfico de la UNAM, Laleget Danza and in Mexico, in addition to her career as a dancer in collaboration with Diego Vázquez, she has presented several programmes, including one with Compañía Nacional de Danza.
